This mental exercise begins by having a person recall…
This mental exercise begins by having a person recall someone in their life who has been kind to them, perhaps a mentor or caretaker, and wishing that person to be safe, happy, healthy, and thrive in their life. Then make those same wishes toward oneself, then to those the person loves, followed by wishing the same for mere acquaintances and finally for everyone everywhere.

In the book
Practicing gratitude is not a slogan but a daily reflection you actually sit down and do. One old and powerful exercise is simply to call to mind, in detail, a single person who was kind to you — a mentor, a parent, a stranger — and to dwell there until the thanks becomes real. And remember, as the whole book of Deuteronomy commands again and again: remember — where you came from, and Who brought you. — The Air Traffic Controller (God)
