There are two ways of being aware. One is a general awareness about your state. If you ask yourself, How am I? you will tend to notice your general wellness: I am good! or I am exhausted! The other kind is a more focused awareness. Focused awareness occurs when you bring all your attention to a particular sensation and just observe that sensation.
