The first step is to develop a feeling of closeness with every Jew in situations where you are not impacted at all. People in your shul, your community, and your broader world of connections are going through many different challenges. Some people you know are out of a job. Some are struggling with medical or mental health conditions. Some are unmarried, or do not have children, or have trouble with their children. Stop and focus on one of them. Feel for him. Let your mind depict what he is enduring. Try, on a small level, to actually be pained by his suffering.
