Suppose you owe someone $100
Suppose you owe someone $100. You can pay him back with a single $100 bill, or with five $20 bills. Regardless, they total the same amount. Even though each $20 bill is worth far less than $100, you're dealing with the same currency, so you can easily add or subtract. Even if you live in Yerushalayim and have only shekalim in your wallet, you can still exchange one currency for another and repay your debt.
