Not sure if you're asking me about togetherness and values at the same time. Togetherness is a value for some individuals and is not a value for others. I value togetherness way too much. There has to be a balance. People shouldn't have to fight for human dignity or a society that preserves human dignity. That is a contradiction in values. If society preserves and values human dignity you would not have to fight for it. It is always those individuals that are on the outskirts of society that are trying to tear society apart for their own reasons that creates the fight. In general, I have found the best way to get people to not fight is by showing them that it is in their best interest to join the other side or to show the common values that both sides have.

In the book
Because the moment a person begins to feel entitled — to feel they are owed more than the next person — their relationships, with family and strangers alike, begin to strain and to breed jealousy. And I will tell you the single most useful thing I learned for keeping the peace among people: the best way to stop two sides from fighting is almost never to defeat one of them, but to show them the values and interests they already hold in common, so that each can see it is in their own interest to come together. The whole art of the wider sky is to keep widening the circle of who counts as "us," not narrowing it down to "me." — Friends, Community & Society (Relationships/Community/Society)
