Many times, the root cause of anger or other strong emotions that we feel are a result of feeling disrespected by other people. This can be corrected by focusing our self-esteem around the values that are important to us. And those values do not depend on other people's opinion of us, but rather are own opinion of ourselves. So a setting of goals that are in alignment with our values can end up helping us tremendously in our relationships with other people. (ah, this ties into my question above)
