Many times, the root cause of anger or other…

Many times, the root cause of anger or other strong emotions that we feel are a result of feeling disrespected by other people. This can be corrected by focusing our self-esteem around the values that are important to us. And those values do not depend on other people's opinion of us, but rather are own opinion of ourselves. So a setting of goals that are in alignment with our values can end up helping us tremendously in our relationships with other people.

In the book

Our tradition is blunt about the alternative: anger rests in the bosom of fools. Most of the time, when I have traced my own anger to its root, I have found not principle but a feeling of being disrespected — and the cure for that is to anchor your self-worth in your own values rather than in other people's opinion of you. People who live inside anger are really nursing a wound of insecurity, forever needing to feel better than everyone else. — The Heart in the Cockpit (Emotion/Awe/Anxiety/Regret/Empathy)
