In her 2011 TED Talk, journalist Kathryn Schulz asked the audience, "How does it feel to be wrong?" People answered predictably enough: it feels dreadful and embarrassing. Schulz thanked the audience for their responses. But she insisted they were all answering the wrong question. They were answering the question, How does it feel to realize you're wrong? Being wrong without realizing it feels exactly the same as being right. That's the trouble. Same with doing wrong. If we don't realize it, doing the wrong thing feels the same as doing anything else. We're just doing what we do, living as we live.
