Difference is another great shame evoker. I like this but you like that. I want this but you want that. I am this but you are that. I feel this but you feel that. Why does difference cause shame? Because difference is hard for the brain. We feel unsure of what the difference means. Is one of us bad? Is one of us better? Am I threatened? Am I "normal"?
