  1. To be sure, at times giving can be harmful or downright dangerous. Handing a toddler the boxcutter that he wants to play with is not "giving." If your gift will enable someone to act in a way that is hazardous or damaging, clearly you would both be better off if you did not give it. Particularly in unhealthy relationships, giving, or excessive giving, can be detrimental. In these situations, however, the restraint on giving is not due to a lack of desire on the part of the would-be giver. On the contrary, one's internal desire should always be to continue to give and give again. It's only out of concern and compassion for the recipient, or awareness of the perils of a particular situation, that the true giver exercises restraint.
