There are several character traits that you need to develop to have critical thinking done well. You need to be open-minded and you have to allow yourself to learn new things and new ways of doing things and allow other people to provide input. You need to be well-informed about what's going on in the world around you especially related to that thinking decision. You should always be gathering information. If you don't have enough knowledge about a particular situation, get the knowledge first and then do the thinking. You should have good judgment which means being able to sift through information and determine what's critical or credible and what's not. You should be able to develop a position. Somebody who is a critical thinker does not sit on the fence but has a position. Always get your issues clarified or ask for clarification which means that you need to be able to ask questions to understand what other people are saying. Critical thinkers are skeptical about all the information that is presented to them by any source. This is not negative. It just means that you do not take any information at face value. Especially when it comes to mass media you need to understand the context within which that is presented. One of the most important components of critical thinking is reflective thinking. You need to examine your own mental processes and be self analytical and self-critical.
