choose your focus model
Page 68 choose your focus model. This model says there are five different ways we can think about, or communicate about, any project, whether the project is a merger, a sales target at work or just a meeting. The model helps us recognize which gear we are thinking from and then allows us to actively choose another way to think. The five levels are number one vision thinking which is about the y or what. Why do you want to do this project What are you trying to achieve? What is your goal here? Having a clear vision is about knowing what your goal or objective is in any given conversation or project. Number two is planning once you know where you are heading planning thinking is about how you're going to get there. Putting in place good planning without worrying about the details yet this an excellent way of ensuring the success of any idea. The third step is detail once we know where we're going and how we're going to get there we need to take action and this is detailed thinking which is all the details of doing. Number four is problem thinking which is the territory of events going wrong and focusing on the problems is common because there are lots of them but it's possible to focus on problems without coming from a problem focus by trying to anticipate the problems number five is drama thinking which is the place where the vision planning detail and problems have fallen apart and all that's left is emotional charge. Sometimes it's unavoidable that you spend time in this place.
