Page 96 reveruchen discusses acquisition of knowledge on a practical level as well. We can experience information in two ways. Personally and from a distance. For example when we hear about somebody who got married or had a baby, if we don't know the people personally it is just a piece of information. If we know them and are close to the couple, hearing the information has an emotional effect on us. Similarly with bad news. When we hear about someone who is suffering illness or about a tragedy in some far-flung part of the world we can process the information intellectually but not emotionally. Obviously we try to empathize with every human being, but the information does not have the same emotional impact as if we know the people affected.
